Tales of the Jewel

Despite the horrors and the terrors that the city has endured in the last few days, as Shilah slowly leaves the sky on the third and final day, the city still holds to its revelry if only as an escape. Great fasts are broken and feasts and celebration begin.

The largest of the feasts, at least the largest open to the public, is the one hosted outside the gates of the Houses of Dahab. Where each house competes with the others to put on a massive meal open to everyone. The Houses, of course, claim this is a display of their love for the city and its people while others rightly assume it is as much a way to display wealth and compete with their rivals.

Regardless of motivation it has become a time for people of all strata to find a moment of pleasure and joy.

While most simply take the time to enjoy the feast a few do go out of their way to help enliven the festivities.

A Dahabi feast meant one thing to certain people in the city; Soraya al-Menjari's famous dancing. And she did not disappoint this festival either. The unusually hot day did not stop her putting on a half dozen dancing sets, dancing with sweat and a smile and joy in her movements.

Joyful day! Generous day! Day where rich people were giving pocket money to random people of limited talent to alleviate a bit of their exploiter guilt!

A good thing, as al-Haddar definitely hadn't brought his A-game today.

"And, turns out, that Kyoso girl and that Kali girl were actually two different girls all along. And totally unrelated by the way. They just happened to look exactly the same.

Also, as all appeared to be lost, the hero suddenly realized the shiny space rock he had found earlier could actually bypass Kali-girl's invulnerability. So he had a dagger forged out of it, that the smith then gave to a gnome so the little humanoid could jump on Kali-girl's back and strike her in the heart from behind.

Why a gnome? Why a dagger and not an arrow, a spearhead, or anything more practical? Don't ask me, I'm the tale teller, not the tale maker."

And that included telling tales of the Unicorn, slightly embellished, and removed some clan and rokugani secrets, to make entertaining tales.

Along side the captivating dancer a well dressed man sang out songs of the season. Songs of celebration his voice was voluminous and rich a loud tenor that belted out across the crowds to please the ears of those who were already festing their eyes upon Soraya's masterful dancing.

The pair were a crowd favorite with many cheers and applause.

Rettousei really had meant just to cross the street. He really had.

But, no, some people recognized him from the morning, and others from the day before, and they brought their friends along. So what could Rettousei do but give them what they want?

He lifts up his voice and sings a song that the Ide teach from the long sojourn of the Unicorn, and though he sings it in Rokugani, so pure are his notes that an overtone rings with them, sounding almost as if another voice joins his an octave above. Faces around him are rapt, and when he launches into a second verse, the the next overtone rings, as if he himself sings chords on his own.

Coins rain down upon him once again, somehow.

I could get used to this, he thinks.

What could make such a celebration even better? Juggling fire! It really wasn't any different skill-wise from regular juggling but Nihira didn't let anyone watching know that. The trick was to make it look much more difficult, that's just show business.
