I mean, from a balance perspective, a 1k1 knife is just +1k0 compared to 0k1 rock thrown with a sling, and you tend to have more rocks than knives to throw.

A rock with a sling isn't very good at close range though - like someone being right on you. A knife is.

But if you attack throwing a knife at close range you are "shooting into melee" all the same, so you'd only be able to use knifes for melee attacks with the knives skill all the same, right?

Also - throwing Improvised things should be Athletics, really. Using Improvised Weapons to hit someone in melee bring Brawling makes sense to me, but the moment you're throwing something it makes sense to me that you should ne using the throwing emphasis under Athletics...

I can see both Athletics and Knives as a throwing for knives thing, mostly because Knives gives you beneits to throwing compared to Athletics, while someone might have Athletics I guess.

I mean, knives in general are still bad weapons.

The bigger question is, how does throwing knives interact with Simple Action Attack structure which relevant to knives?
And these two things are my thinking too. Which is why I tend to prefer allowing one to throw knives with either knives or Athletics. I wouldn't even impose a penalty to throwing with Athletics, really - the knives Specialist will have the benefit of Mastery Abilities after all.

And as I said, attacking in melee with a knives does require the knives skill, even by RAW

I suppose my issue is why would athletics make you more skilled in the best way to throw an improvised weapon? Being good at athletics isn't going to make your accuracy with throwing a chair or a knife better. Knowing how to use a knife is going to show you the best way to use a knife - in melee range, or throwing it. It's your expertise with a knife

I think it comes down to giving diplomats, sahirr, and other generally non-combatant people an option (more like a comforting blanket) that they TOO, can do something in combat.

Which is throwing an 1k1 weapon using a non-weapon skill, which gives no mastery benefits.

I mean....knives are bad. IF you get to rank 5 in skill, they get slightly better. Or if you shell out for a kukri or a sacred knife, maybe.

In the end, it feels that it deosn't matter much? If you don't invest in knives, you still suck at them. If you invest....you can possibly make them work. If you INVEST.

My thinking exactly.

Also - can Kukri and Katar even be thrown? They don't seem like good choices to throw. So while a knife user could wield them and get a better DR, someone with only Athletics would be stuck with the 1k1 knife without Mastery Abilities (I.e. no way to get a TN boost from dual wielding without a penalty to attacks, no +1k0 if Knives 5)

Katar wouldn't benefit from being thrown. A kukri can be thrown

Hm... Well, another 0k2 thrown weapon then. Like slings.

Can they be carried freely?

Yes, they still fall under knives. They're not common in the city but they're allowed.

The reason throwing is Athletics is because it takes power and muscle to chuck things. Throwing a rock and throwing a knife are two vastly different things. Athletics for throwing improvised weapons makes perfect sense you just pick up thing and throw

To throw knives you have to have a particular technique, you don't have to know how to throw a chair you do have to know how to throw a knife.

If we're going for what makes sense knives use knives and anything else uses Athletics.
