Concealing Weapons and Armor
Posted: Tue May 17, 2022 1:14 pm
Weapons, other than knives, and armor are banned within the confines of the city except for the city guard and others granted leave by the Khadi. As such knives, staves and small clubs ('walking sticks' and 'canes'), and improvised weapons are most common in combat within the city.
Rank 5 Sleight of Hand allows for concealing Small weapons in positions where they would be accessible as a normal draw actions (simple or free action depending on masteries). This is the answer to 'why would I ever take a jambiya as my sword?' for Assassins with more Swordsmanship than Knives. This is an opposed roll.
Larger weapons cannot be concealed directly on one's person. It is possible to try to hide them in other ways (the ol' 'sword in a sitar case' trick) though this is primarily for transportation purposes as using them, even in self defense, is still illegal. Attempting to retrieve an item that is stowed in such a fashion requires a complex action and is not impacted by skill masteries.
It is possible to attempt to conceal a chain shirt (Sleight of Hand versus Investigation) under other clothing however this is bulky, awkward, and hot. Double the armor's penalties. If worn during the daytime the character suffers a rank of Fatigue at the end of each timeslot the armor is worn. If worn at night they suffer a rank of Fatigue at the end of every second timeslot the armor is worn.
Larger, bulkier armor cannot be concealed in this fashion. One can attempt to throw a cloak over it and hope no one notices but the lines of armor are generally very distinct even in that case. There is no Sleight of Hand roll, viewers roll Investigation against TN10 for Partial Armor and TN5 for Light Armors (including Lorica Segmentata). Heavy and Riding Armors cannot be hidden in this fashion.
If you are sneaking a non-knife/staff weapon or armor (or carrying them openly for some foolish reason) in a thread within the city but outside of your own home please tag the GM in your first post so we can check for any negative outcome. If you do not tag in the first post you are not considered to have the items on you. Metagaming and only sneaking them into threads a player, but not their character, knows might be dangerous but not into non-dangerous threads in general will be called out.
