Knives are fine.

It largely means simple knives and staves. You could probably get away with a kukri but probably not a kama. Katar would likely push things a little.

Correct - the ruling's not based on stats but on visible 'knifiness'. A guard isn't likely to read a kama as a knife even if the mechanics treat it as one. A katar on your belt might look like a knife but it will stand out in use.
