Faruq started moving to get back to his feet, but even before he managed to complete that, he looked at the wretch again, trying to met his eyes.

This time, his own gaze was steely, his voice deeper, graver and louder as he spoke again while getting up.

"Sayyid. You will have some respect."

Faruq's somewhat raised voice and seriousness words do ring true - quite true, in fact. Now... was that enough to make the unfortunately disrespectful wretch hold back and learn to share?

He certainly hoped it would be...

Would it teach the wretch a lesson? Probably not. Would it send the wretch off in a scurrying crawl of terror, clutching what food they had already grabbed? Definitely so.

Yelping like a struck dog they try to scuttle away.

Faruq looked at the poor shadow of a proper person as they moved away. He considered moving after him for a moment... but there was nothing to be gained by doing that.

It was truly a tragedy, to see someone reach that state. He felt he could have helped that person further, if he had said the right words...

Fear and respect are the same, he remembered from his father's words, even long before he had first read Mekhem's sayings himself.

But were they? Could respect be gained by fear the same way it could by actual understanding?

He shook his head. It was something to ponder on. It seemed unlikely that the poor soul would have learned much from this day - of sharing, respect or anything else.

But well... they would survive another day. Maybe they could learn something tomorrow, or the day after. Faruq would be back there one day. Hopefully so would one or two other, offering help. Perhaps, in time, even someone like that could learn to share, and to offer help.

He looked at whatever food was still in the bucket or scattered through the ground, and slowly, patiently, started gathering it, placing it on the towel again. When that was finally done, he organised his medical supplies and tools, and sat down again, looking around gently again and nodded at whoever might be looking.

Offering help was often not an easy job. But it was a necessary one.

One of the pieces of fruit near the top of the bucket seemed to already be covered in bugs... surely it must have been one of the ones scattered on the ground....

Bugs on the fruit? So soon?

Perhaps the merchants had made a better deal than he had expected. But... he thought he had properly inspected the ones he bought.

He looks at it again, then looks for a piece of cloth, paper, leaves or anything else he could maybe use to not touch it directly and tries to take the rotten piece of fruit out of the bucket, lest it spread whatever it was that had got on it to the rest of the food...

It may have been too little, too late. Some of the insects seemed to already have migrated to the fruit below.
