Rufus had picked up rumors about of Medinaat al-Salaam,the Jewel. Of them had been stories has been of great researchers, or scientists pushing the boundaries of learning. So, arriving here was, well...

"What a waste" Rufus kicked at a stone, sending it skittering along the dirt. There was majesty here. Even looking at the skeletal husk, the training on the engineering needed to build such a thing hinted at masterful work. And now, it had been wrecked.

Rufus peeks around. Maybe it wouldn't be a total loss. If it hadn't been picked clean, maybe there would be something interesting to learn, to salvage, as he tried to make sense of this new world.

With his tactical training it is readily apparent to Rufus, as he approaches the grounds, that this is one of the rarer places in the city that the guard still regularly patrols.

If he wanted to do an in depth investigation he could try to sneak in but, in broad daylight, the odds of success seemed dubious at best.

Keen eyes did allow him to potentially pick up some information from afar without attracting too much attention.

"They still patrol?" Rufus was familiar enough with the regular lines from the tramping of feet. As a cadet, he'd needed to take watch more times than he could count and the signs of a patrol path were clear to him.

If guards were here, there must have been something that people did not want him to find. Now was not the right time to check though, not when he stood out like a sore thumb. A close look would wait for another time, but since he had come all this way...

Rufus pulls out a roll of parchment and charcoal, sketching the architecture, using his field engineering training to guess measurements. Hopefully something would jump out at him.

Rufus had seen his share of demolished buildings - such was the nature of Conquest and the training for it. The ruins looked like they had faced a prolonged siege bombardment from some of the Empire's finest weapons and at first he almost assumed that something similar must be the case. But then he realized what felt wrong. Buildings around, and the road he walked on, were unblemished and seemed as old as the ruins not more recent construction. Whatever had leveled the building had done so with absolute precision despite the sheer destructive power.

He also noted that, while the destruction was incredibly thorough, it did seem to have been applied as an exterior force. There were signs of likely fire at the time as well. But, if things had collapsed from the outside in then there was some small chance that there might have been pockets covered by the debris that were spared the flames.

"Interesting" Rufus leans forward, resting his chin on his fist in contemplation. "But not for right now"

The longer he remained, the odds were that one of the patrols would catch up with him.

"Let's see if there is something that I can use to get around when there is less chance of being noticed" The Yodotai turns to leave.

"You seems to like trouble, stranger...or perhaps you are plagued with bouts foolishness" said a quiet voice coming from an obscured part of the street

Rufus draws himself up slightly.

"I wouldn't say that I like trouble...stranger" Rufus attempts to return the word with the same inflection as the person calling him. His fingers slowly stray to the pugio knifr hilt. "As much as it seems to be the byproduct of anything worth doing."

"As for foolishness." Rufus actually chuckles. "Well, yes. One cannot begin to improve at anything without being thought of as foolish and stupid" The words slip back the lessons of his teacher as they drilled in line.

The man showed himself a bit better, but was clearly trying to remain unseen or unidentifiable from most directions

''Then follow me, sayyed, mayhaps a cup coffee can wake up that brain of yours.'' his eyes darted left and right ''At any rate if you are trying to get yourself killed I would rather you spend your copper at my establishment before you manage to succeed at it.''

He moved back in the alley and waved a hand for the odd man to follow.
