Shadowlands
The Shadowlands taint is nearly unknown in the Burning Sands but that does not mean it is not present. Kansen do not survive to bring maho to the people but the Realm of Evil itself extends its tendrils into all lands.
The vast majority of those bearing the Taint within Medinaat al-Salaam are either Rokugani or Invindi who were exposed to the Realm's power where its stronghold on this world borders their lands. That said there are still dark and hidden places, the Black Earth, where anyone could potentially have contracted the Taint.
Despite this Medinaat al-Salaam knows little of the true terrors of the Taint as those succumbing to its touch tend to be drawn back by the siren call of the Shadowlands or Black Earth before their humanity is fully stripped away.

Lying Darkness
From trapping Shinjo to manipulating various Factions the Darkness, or Khayel or Sayel as it is more commonly known, has played a role within the Sands and Medinaat al-Salaam since the dawn of time.
That said its manipulations are slower, and even subtler, than its movements in Rokugan. Faceless 'ninja' and consumed souls are few and far between as it instead works through subtle nudges and influences to get what it wants.
